Transforming reading and writing for every child
At our school, we are committed to developing confident and capable readers and writers. Our reading instruction is based on the Science of Reading, a large body of research that explains how children learn to read most effectively.
Research shows there are five essential components of reading, all of which must be taught together:
-
Phonemic Awareness – hearing and working with sounds in spoken words
-
Phonics – understanding how letters and sounds work together
-
Fluency – reading accurately, smoothly, and with expression
-
Vocabulary – understanding the meaning of words
-
Comprehension – understanding what is read
These elements work together to help reading become accurate, meaningful, and enjoyable.
Our early reading program, Read Write Inc. (RWI), is based on Science of Reading research. Through RWI, children:
-
Learn sounds and how they match to letters
-
Read decodable books that include only the sounds they have been taught
-
Practise reading, spelling, and writing in every lesson
-
Build fluency and comprehension through repeated reading and discussion
In our video tutorial below, we give you a view into what RWI looks like at St Joseph’s, Mernda.
